  • Young Kiwi, Matthew Mitchell, 22, died in Canada after a sudden medical event at work.
  • A Givealittle page raised more than $15,000 to help bring Mitchell home to Christchurch.
  • Mitchell was remembered as a talented gymnast and coach, known for his kindness and adventurous spirit.

A young Kiwi has died while working in Canada after a sudden medical event.

Matthew (Mattie) Mitchell, 22, had left his hometown of Christchurch to work in Canada.

He died on January 23 after going into “serious medical distress” at his restaurant job in Whistler.

The Herald understands Mitchell had been working at Whistler’s local fine dining restaurant Wild Blue and the Whistler Creekside Market.

Both restaurants shared their “deep” sadness over Mitchell’s death.

“Despite the best efforts of Whistler first responders, we are heartbroken to share that they did not survive,” Wild Blue said on Facebook.

“This loss has deeply impacted our team.”

Whistler Creekside Market said Mitchell went into “serious medical distress”.

A Givealittle had been started to bring Mitchell’s body home and has raised more than $15,000.

Lisa Brignull, who worked alongside Mitchell at F45 in Christchurch and created the page, said his mother, father and brother had flown to Canada.

“The process of bringing [Mitchell] home is deeply complex and comes with significant expenses.

“A full autopsy will be conducted in Vancouver to determine the cause of his passing, and there are numerous logistical, legal, and financial challenges involved in returning him to New Zealand.”

The page described Mitchell as a “remarkable F45 coach and a talented gymnast”.

“He inspired and encouraged everyone around him. His infectious laugh, kind heart, and ability to uplift others made him truly one of a kind.

“He even ran a marathon without training for it, demonstrating his incredible determination, resilience, and adventurous spirit.

“He believed in pushing boundaries and living life to the fullest.”

It said Mitchell adored his family and said he spoke highly of his parents and younger brother.

“He leaves behind unforgettable memories and a legacy of love, laughter, and positivity.”
